The Vault series takes its inspiration from form’s found in Gothic Vaulted architecture and medieval Plate Armour. The only existing record we have of English medieval armour comes from funerary monuments, often in Alabaster. The vessels explore this lost tradition of English Alabaster work, abstracting these old symbols of strength and protection, rendering them in delicate, translucent stone
The Vault Vessel (Serenissima) was selected for the 2022 Homo faber Venice Biennale.
The form and final dimensions are in many ways dictated by the shape of the natural quarried stone. The carving process is one of constant dialogue with the piece, during the carving process as the natural qualities and flaws of the stone are slowly revealed.
