This unique and arresting piece captures the rush of energy and movement as a shoal of 1,000 mackerel switches direction, their silver bellies flashing in the sunlight. Each fish is fabricated by hand in robust paper-based materials with a metallic reflective quality, and a further five processes including printing, die cutting, scoring, folding into a 3Dimensional form, finishing and pinning to the back board. This work represents days of precision making, and the result is of exceptional and robust quality.
To Byrne, the natural world creates beautiful patterns out of what can seem to be random and chaotic. Yet this chaos is choreographed by the creatures themselves – be it by communication or a shared motivation.
