This client had seen one of Blott’s works online and, noting the description of the way it reflected light, was inspired to enquire further. The apartment looks over the urban landscape of New York and the organic movement of shells provided a gentle foil.
The room faces north-east, so the wall gets direct sun in the morning from the right side at about a 45 to 60 degree angle. It gets indirect light for the rest of the day.
Abalones are the source of mother-of-pearl, with their irridescent beauty that reflect light. Blott selects those that are white rather than multi-coloured. If the day is bright and sunny the shells gleam like jewellery. If the day is dull, the shells still shine and lift the spirit of a room.
