Texas AbaloneTexas Abalone
Our client in Texas wanted a solution for a link corridor with floor to ceiling windows, exposing the hanging wall to full sunlight. Constant exposure to direct sunlight and UV without filters will inevitably deteriorate paintings, textiles and other materials. Shells are an exception and abalones are robust enough to cope with children’s enquiring hands.
The client determined the size they wanted and the amount of ‘energy’ in the movement of the piece. This is the result, created one the course of size weeks.
It takes enormous skill to create something so seemingly effortless. Where traditional shellwork is planned in advance, the artist knowing where every shell will be placed, this style of work relies on the creative skill of the artist allowing the flow to evolve. It is not unknown for occasional pieces to be ‘unpicked’ to ensure the flows works.
“It is finally up on the wall and it is lovely. It welcomes the morning light with such vitality; at night it essentially glows as the sun sets…..The story of its journey….Blott’s and your perseverance and kindness all along the way, makes it all the sweeter — so thank you. We adore it!”
