Moon Rise

Tom Palmer

A conversation between bold, impactful design and richly textured, crafted surface. Two principle techniques are applied. Shou -Sugi – Ban which is a traditional Japanese charred finish over American yellow pine panels, sealed with matte hard wax oil. The inset moon is fashioned in a burnt gesso which is an unique and unpredictable process and finish, in which resin gesso is burnt and carved back, creating a molten surface riven with cracks and craters.

The techniques create a raw, almost Brutalist, appeal and you are drawn in to experience an intriguing surface. The effects of the processes involved are natural and deliberate, contributing to the integrity of the piece as worked entirely by artful hand.

Custom patinated brass sphere pin hinges and capping plates enable the panels to move two ways for multiple floor arrangements. The pins are easily removed to enable the panels to be stacked for shipping. The overall measurement noted on this listing is for the screen pulled flat, whereas it would necessarily be concertina to stand upright in situ.
